Southern Disability Trust

Brief History

The Southern Disability Trust was created in 2010 following the demise of Wheelchair Basketball South Island Inc several years earlier. Two prominent members of that team – Travis Moffat & John Wieser – were engaged as “independent living” coaches in the new Transitions Unit of the Burwood Spinal Unit. The rationale for this unit had been informed by research undertaken by the Burwood Academy of Independent Living, then managed by Tony Kunowski. Travis & John approached Tony to help with strategy and administration who recommended the formation of a charitable trust ¬†and to widen the purposes of the trust beyond wheelchair basketball in recognition of the huge benefits to people with acquired disability of participation in outdoor recreational activities.
